VPNs help users securely access a network, even when they’re away from their office or main network. This guide will cover how to connect a macOS device to an L2TP/IPsec VPN server using the built-in VPN feature in macOS.
The L2TP/IPsec protocol is used because it’s compatible with macOS and various other operating systems. With IPsec support, VPN connections can provide additional protection through data encryption, making communication between macOS devices and VPN servers more secure than without a VPN.
In this tutorial, you will learn the steps to add a VPN configuration on macOS, enter the server address and credentials, set up an IPsec shared secret, and successfully connect the device to the VPN server.
- Make sure you have the information needed to connect to the VPN. In this tutorial, we’ll use
the VPN server: vpn.testserver.net
Username: user01
Password: comet123
IPSec preshared key: comet12345678
Server in the remote area: 10.1.1.11 - Click the network icon > Network Preferences
Make sure you have an active connection, in this example my Mac is connected to the internet via a LAN cable
Add a new connection by clicking the + button at the bottom left
Select VPN, L2TP over IPsec, and fill in the name of the VPN profile to be created
Click Create
- Referring to the credential information you already have, complete the configuration as shown in the following image.
Check “Show VPN status in menu bar” so that the connection is easy to monitor.
Click authentication settings and fill in the password for the VPN account and also the preshared key in the Machine Authentication column.
Finish by clicking apply.
- Still on the newly created VPN profile, click Advanced at the bottom right then check the option “Send all traffic over VPN connection” then click OK
- Test the VPN connection profile that has been created by clicking Connect.
If the configuration is correct, the VPN status will change to Connected and the remote server 10.1.1.11 should be reachable.
- Quick access to Connect/Disconnect can be done from the menu bar.
