Laptop overheating is a fairly common problem. This can cause the fan to spin excessively fast, performance to decrease, the laptop to feel slow, and even cause it to shut down unexpectedly.
In many cases, the main cause of a laptop overheating is more often related to hardware problems , not due to a lack of cooling applications.
Some of the most common causes include:
The air vents on the bottom or side of the laptop function to dissipate heat.
If the laptop is used on a mattress, sofa, pillow, or other soft surface, the vents may be blocked so that hot air cannot escape properly.
Use the laptop on a table or other flat, hard surface.
Dust can build up on fans and air ducts, restricting airflow and preventing the cooling system from operating optimally.
Laptops that have been used for a long time should be cleaned regularly by an experienced technician.
Thermal paste helps transfer heat from the processor to the heatsink.
After prolonged use, thermal paste can dry out, making the heat dissipation process less effective.
Thermal paste replacement should be done by a technician as the laptop needs to be disassembled.
Laptops can also overheat quickly if the fan is not spinning normally, is damaged, or its speed is reduced.
Besides the fan, a loose heatsink or other cooling components can also cause the temperature to rise.
Running games, design applications, rendering, or too many programs at once can increase laptop temperature.
A temperature increase while running heavy applications is still considered normal. However, if the laptop remains very hot even when used for light tasks, the cooling system needs to be checked.
Some steps that can be taken include:
A cooling pad can help improve airflow, but it won’t solve the problem if the fan is broken, the vents are clogged, or the thermal paste has dried out.
Be wary of software that claims to drastically reduce laptop temperature while increasing performance.
Software cannot:
Some software may simply reduce processor performance or limit power usage. While this may lower temperatures, it also typically reduces laptop performance.
Therefore, don’t trust apps that promise lower temperatures and instant performance improvements.
If your laptop remains hot when used for light work, the best solution is to check the condition of the hardware and cooling system.
Laptops that overheat quickly are generally more often caused by problems with ventilation, dust, fans, thermal paste, or other cooling systems.
Installing cooling software isn’t the primary solution to this problem. Ensure the vents aren’t blocked and perform a hardware inspection if the laptop continues to overheat.
