How to Create Columns in Microsoft Word

  1. Open a Microsoft Word document.
  2. The text block you want to make into multiple columns.
  3. Click the Layout or Page Layout tab .
  4. Select the Columns menu .
  5. Select the desired number of columns.

Some of the options available include:

  • One for one column.
  • Two for two columns.
  • Three for three columns.
  • Left for the smaller left column.
  • Right for the smaller right column.

Once selected, the text will automatically be divided into several columns like writing in a newspaper.


How to Set Column Width and Spacing

To manually set column sizes:

  1. Click the Layout tab .
  2. Select Columns .
  3. Click More Columns .
  4. Specify the number of columns in the Number of columns section .
  5. Set the column width in the Width section .
  6. Set the distance between columns in the Spacing section .
  7. Click OK .

Check the Equal column width option if you want all columns to have the same width.


How to Add Lines Between Columns

To make the column display clearer, you can add a dividing line.

  1. Open the Layout menu > Columns > More Columns .
  2. Check the Line between option .
  3. Click OK .

A vertical line will appear between the columns.


How to Create Columns in Certain Sections

If you only want to make a portion of the text into a column:

  1. Block the desired text section.

How to Move to the Next Column

To move text to the next column without waiting for the first column to fill:

How to Restore to One Column

  1. A text block that has multiple columns.

The text will return to a normal single column.
