Using a VPN is one method for connecting a computer to an internal network more securely, even if the user is outside the office or main network. This guide will explain the steps for configuring an L2TP/IPsec VPN connection on a Windows 8 computer as a client.
L2TP/IPsec is used because it’s natively supported by Windows 8, so users don’t need to install additional applications to establish a VPN connection. The combination of L2TP and IPsec also provides an additional layer of security through data encryption, making communication between the client computer and the VPN server more secure.
Through this tutorial, you will learn how to add VPN configuration, set connection parameters, and connect Windows 8 to a VPN server using the L2TP/IPsec protocol.
- Right click on the network icon in the system tray > Open Network and Sharing Center
- Click Set up a new connection or network and select Connect to a workplace
- Click Use my Internet connection (VPN)
Fill in the Internet address column with the VPN server address/IP, and the destination name as the name of the VPN connection profile.
- The newly created profile will appear, click connect.
Fill in the VPN username and password.
- If the username and password are correct, the status will change to Connected.
- Ping test to the server on the remote side
