Google is finally preparing to allow users to change their @gmail.com email address or create a new Gmail alias. This information comes from a newly discovered Google support document.
Until now, Gmail users could only add aliases. However, the main @gmail.com address could not be changed. That limitation is about to end.
According to Google, the new feature is designed to give users more control over their email accounts. Users will be able to switch to a new Gmail address without creating a new Google account.
Google explained that the email address linked to a Google Account is used to sign in to Google services and helps identify the account. This makes the ability to change a Gmail address a significant improvement.
Although Google has not made an official announcement yet, the presence of a support document strongly suggests that the feature is already rolling out.
Currently, the support page is only available in Hindi. This suggests that Google may be testing the feature in India before a wider global release.
If the feature is available for your account, you will find the option under Settings, along with a link to the official Google support page.
If you change your @gmail.com address, the original address will continue to work. This means you may end up with two active Gmail addresses acting as aliases.
There is no official timeline yet for when this feature will be available to all Gmail users worldwide.
